Canon Background:
Data is an android, constructed by Dr. Noonien Soong in or shortly before 2336. He was discovered by Starfleet personnel in 2338, while investigating the destruction of the colony at Omicron Theta. Three years later, Data entered Starfleet Academy, then served in Starfleet. In 2364, he was assigned to the USS Enterprise under Captain Jean Luc Picard.

There are only four known androids of similar type and design to Data. Lore, Data's brother, appeared nearly identical to Data. Lore possessed a more sinister nature, however, and has since been deactivated. Lal was an android created by Data, using his own neural net matrix as a design base. Unfortunately, she malfunctioned after an emotional overload and ceased functions shortly after. A fourth android, in the form of Dr. Juliana Tainer, was discovered by Data when she fell and injured her arm. It was learned that Dr. Tainer was Dr. Soong's assistant and lover, during the time of Lore and Data's creation. At some point, she fell gravely ill, and Dr. Soong perfected his technique of transferring a human mind into an android brain. Dr. Tainer is unaware of her true nature.

Data's rights as an individual were challenged, when Starfleet scientists wished to disassemble him for study. He won the case, however, and while not recognized as a fully sentient being, he is free to make his own decisions. As part of this fiasco, however, he often sends reports, much like a journal, to a Commander Maddox.

Dr. Noonien Soong, while believed to be deceased, activated a homing beacon at one point, which summoned Data to him. Data unwittingly commandeered the Enterprise and beamed down to an unknown planet. While there, his brother appeared, also summoned by the recall beacon. During the meeting on the planet, Lore impersonated Data and stole an emotion chip that Dr. Soong had designed for Data. Dr. Soong caught on, but Lore mortally wounded him in the process of escaping.

Some time later, Data encountered Lore, who had taken control of a group of isolated Borg. Lore used the emotion chip to lure his brother into experimenting on his crew-mates, by feeding him emotions such as rage and sadistic pleasure. The Enterprise crew managed to reset Data's morality protocols, which interfered with Lore's emotional control. In the end, Data was forced to kill his brother, which damaged the stolen emotion chip.

A few years later, Data requested that the chip be implanted into his system. Though it was damaged, and "memories" that Dr. Soong had left for Data were apparently lost, the chip itself gave Data a basic, yet expanding range of emotion. During his subsequent mission, the emotion chip was fused to his neural net, meaning he could not remove it. Fortunately, he was able to create a method for deactivating the chip at will.


Personality:

Data's personality can seem somewhat ambiguous, due to his nature as an android. He is loyal to those he considers friends, and enjoys learning about hobbies and activities they may persue. He is immensely curious about human nature, and has at times expressed a desire to be more human. He did appear to object to the idea of becoming an actual human, though, when offered a gift from Q. (The gift was laughter.) Though his questions and insight on the world around him can often seem child-like in nature, they often offer a perspective to those around him that they may not have otherwise noticed.

Being an android, Data has a computer-like memory. He has excellent recall, and deductive skills. At times, Data has shown a strong liking of the works of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, author of the Sherlock Holmes stories. Data is also fully functional and programmed in various sexual techhiques, however rarely uses these protocols. Other hobbies Data enjoys include: playing music (violin, guitar, oboe), painting, roleplay (as Sherlock Holmes), dream interpretation, and raising a cat.
